Following decades of leading acclaimed jazz fusion projects, guitarist and composer James Morgan launched his signature "West Coast Contemporary Jazz" sound under the Ghost Jazz Trio brand—a move that has earned four nominations for Best Jazz Album of the Year and a nod from the 67th Grammy Awards for best contemporary instrumental album.
For his 2023 release Groovin’ Smooth, Morgan expanded the trio into a dynamic, hard-grooving quintet, delivering a ten-track album that’s rich with rhythm, energy, and style. Showcasing his fluid, melodic phrasing on a hollow-body Pat Metheny-style jazz guitar, Morgan’s distinctive tone and songwriting prowess take center stage—backed by a powerhouse ensemble of seasoned musicians.
The album features legendary guitarist Dean Brown (Billy Cobham, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn) as co-writer, arranger, and producer. Bassist Nathan Brown (Bob James, Eric Marienthal, Brian Simpson), keyboardist Chase Pado, and drummer Tres Hodgens round out the lineup, bringing depth and precision to every track.
Groovin’ Smooth was recorded, engineered, and mastered by Grammy Award-winner Alan Sanderson (Elton John, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones) at Pacific Beat Recording Studio in San Diego, CA—ensuring every note is captured with studio excellence.
